Fue profesor de álgebra y geometría en la escuela de Blakely. En 1895 regresa a John Hopkins. En 1896 ejerce de director en la escuela de primaria Anderson. En 1897 es profesor de matemáticas y astronomía en la Universidad de Mercer. En 1898 asistió a cursos en la Universidad de Chicago cuyo profesor fue John Dewey.

Schnörkeloses Songwriting, treibende Grooves und schwere Gitarrenriffs charakterisieren den Sound der vier Musiker ebenso, wie die sehr kraftvollen, aber immer melodiösen, zum Teil mehrstimmigen, Gesangsarrangements.
